SHILLONG: Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Conrad K Sangma, on Friday slammed the State Government for not announcing any economic package for the victims of the recent flash floods of Garo Hills.

Sangma also claimed that the Government was not doing enough for the thousands of flood-hit people of Garo Hills.

The recent floods in the district have claimed nine lives and affected at least 30,000 people in Selsella, Phulbari, Dadenggiri, Rangsakona and Rajabala Assembly constituencies.

“Massive economic losses have occurred but the Government has so far not announced any economic package for the affected,” Sangma added.

Commenting on the Rs one-lakh ex-gratia announced earlier by the State Government for the victims, Sangma said, “There has to be an economic stimulus package for the people who have lost their homes, live stock and agricultural produces like grains etc., in the floods.

The Opposition Leader while taking a dig at the MUA Government for forming a team consisting of junior engineers to assess the loss of property in the flood, also maintained that the process of assessing the losses is not being done properly since it is based on short and immediate losses.

It may be mentioned that Union Minister of State for Rural Development Agatha Sangma has urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to release funds for the flood-affected people of Garo Hills.
