1 killed in accidental shot
Kohima: A 27-year-old man was killed in an accidental firing from his own gun in Kiphire on Friday.
Official sources on Saturday said the mishap took place at the victim’s farm at around 1630 hours, when Sangtam, alias Mughato Aye, Village Development Board Secretary of Shishimi (Singsi) Village under Kiphire district of Nagaland was trying to remove the cartridges from his double barrel gun after it failed to fire.
While trying to check the cartridges, the gun went off accidentally, hitting longtise on the head and killing him on the spot. (UNI)
BLA members surrender
Aizawl: Two members of the Bru Liberation Army (BLA) surrendered to the Mizoram Police along with two pistols and several rounds of ammunition of different weapons, an official statement said here on Saturday.
The statement said that ‘Lieutenant’ Bisuram and ‘Corporal’ Romasai Reang surrendered before H Sangawia, Superintendent of Police of Mamit district at Mizoram-Tripura border Mamit district’s Kanhmun.
The two surrendered militants reportedly told interrogators that the outfit has its headquarters at Santipur in Assam’s Karimganj district, about three km from Mamit district’s Kolalian village.
“The BLA has three AK-47 assault rifles with 150 rounds of ammunitions and other arms including one each of M-16 rifle, Carbine, G-2 and SLR and a few sounds of ammunition and also four pistols and five grenades,” the insurgents said. (PTI)
3 held, bike-lift gang busted
Itanagar: Three persons were arrested as the Arunachal police blew off the lid on a bike-lifter gang at Itanagar. At least eight stolen motorcycles have been recovered from the gang, police sources said on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Itanagar police station officer-in charge M Bui, arrested Raju Basumatry, Giogi Take and Lungku Takar during night patrolling on Friday. The three arrested men have been sent to 14 days’ police custody by the magistrate. (PTI)
Audio-video CD in support of Anna released
Guwahati: An audio-video CD featuring songs in support of Anna Hazare and his campaign against corruption was released in Tezpur in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district on Saturday. Journalists and artists of Tezpur came together to bring out the CD, which featured Hazare’s picture on the cover. (UNI)
Traders urge to stop collection in check gates
Kohima: Kohima Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) is of the view that check gates were needed to for public security and to prevent escape of criminals after committing crimes, but there should not be a collection centre of money.
In a statement here on Saturday, KCCI spokesperson Neingulie Nakhro felt the government misunderstood public ire against illegal gate collections by removing them. (UNI)
