Undertrial commits suicide

Badaun (UP): An undertrial lodged in the district jail allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree here, police said. 30-year-old Jayatpal, lodged in jail since May, was under stress after his bail application was recently rejected by a local court, Jail Superintendent V K Dohre said on Saturday. Jayatpal committed suicide in the jail compound last evening. (PTI)

Three drown in water-filled pit

Lucknow: Three children drowned in a water-filled pit in Bakshi Ka Talab area here, police said on Saturday. The mishap took place near a brick kiln in Mampur Bana village here yesterday, they said. The three have been identified as Vimal Kumar (16), Saurabh Singh (11) and Harsh Singh (10). The bodies have been sent for post mortem. (PTI)

Two motorcyclists killed in mishap

Bijnor (UP): Two persons were on Saturday killed when a truck collided with their motorcycle near Samippur railway crossing here, police said. The mishap occurred when the truck driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed into the motorbike, they said. The two are yet to be identified. (PTI)

Two arrested for black-marketing

Jammu: Two persons were arrested for black-marketing cement bags meant for Kishenganga project undergoing in the Kashmir Valley being constructed by the National Hydro-electric Power Corporation (NHPC). “Two persons were taken into custody last evening when they diverted the truck carrying 400 bags of cement for the Kishenganga Project towards Udheywala in city outskirts for black-marketing,’’ police sources here on Saturday said. They said the truck loaded the cement from Hindustan Construction Company at Narwal, which was to be transported to the Kishenganga project and diverted it to Udheywala where two persons were off-loading cement from each bag and filling it in empty bags titled as ‘JK Gold’. The accused were identified as Rajesh Kumar and Subash Chander, residents of Akhnoor. The bags were also seized, they said and added that a case has been registered and investigations are in progress. (UNI)

Grenades recovered from Army unit

Jammu: About 14 grenades were recovered from inside the Army unit in Domana area on city outskirts, police sources here said here on Saturday. ‘’Panic gripped 20 Grenadier Unit of Army in Muthi area yesterday when troops found four grenades inside the campus,’’ police sources told UNI. They said following that searches were launched and ten more grenades marked HE-36 were recovered from the Unit, which might have washed away due to continuous rains. ‘’The grenades belong to the army and reached the ground as they washed from the nearby depot due to rains,’’ police added. Man stabs wife, mother-in-law

Hyderabad: A 33-year-old man stabbed to death his wife and mother-in-law with a sharp knife at the latter’s residence here last night and surrendered in a police station. According to police, the accused Ali Mohammad Khan, an autorickshaw driver was living separately for a long time, due to differences with his wife Ayesha Begam (29). Khan attacked his wife and her mother, when they were offering Ramzan prayers at their residence near Jama Masjid in old city. After committing the crime, Khan walked into Chandrayangutta police station, carrying the blood stained knife and surrendered before the police. (UNI)

Man gets life term for killing wife

Muzaffarnagar: A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court for killing his wife after she failed to fulfil his demands for dowry. The court in Baghpat yesterday held Sabir Hasan guilty and also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him. Sabir Hasan strangulated his wife Anisa Begum on September 25, 2008 after she refused to comply with his dowry demands. An FIR was then registered by the victim’s father against Hasan. (PTI)

Youth kills father for torturing mother

Burdwan (WB): Unable to bear his mother being constantly tortured by his father, a youth on Saturday shot him dead in Asansol in Burdwan district, police said. The incident occurred at Chinakuri where Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) worker Lakshmikanta Bauri (50) used to come home drunk regularly and beat up his wife. The same thing occurred last night and the torture continued till morning, the police said. Upset over his behaviour, 20-year-old Sanjib shot dead his father. The bullet hit Bauri in the throat and he died on the spot, they said, adding Sanjib fled from the spot. (PTI)
