Assam Guv greets people ahead of Id-ul-Fitr
Guwahati: Assam Governor J B Pattnaik today extended his warm greetings to the people on the occasion of Id-ul-Fitr, which will be celebrated on August 31.
In a message, the Governor wished a happy, peaceful and prosperous Id to all citizens of the state.
Urging all to join the festivities, he said, ”Festivals like these bring about the much-needed unity, harmony and joy into the society.”
”My Muslim brothers and sisters have fasted for the entire month of Ramadan to fight the lure of the evil forces and cleanse their souls of all the sins. On the culmination of this arduous task, I wish them best of luck and may the Almighty fulfill all their desires,” the Governor added. (UNI)
Suicide on rise in Mizoram
Aizawl: On average, five persons commit suicide every month in Aizawl district alone which the police said was alarming given the small population of the state.
Police recorded 38 cases of suicide in Aizawl district during the last eight months, from January to August.
”This means that nearly five persons on average commit suicide in each month,” a police statement said today.
While a 76-year-old was the oldest one, a 15-year-old was the youngest person to have committed suicide during the last eight years.
However, majority of those who committed suicide were between the ages of 20 to 30.
Health officials said mental depression was the main cause behind the crime in Mizoram. (UNI)
Directives for payment of salary
Guwahati: Assam government’s Finance Department today issued an directive to ensure that there would be no delay in payment of salaries to state government employees for the month of August.
The Finance department issued a directive requesting all Controlling Officers responsible for budget allocations to immediately communicate the same to all concerned officials of the state, an official release said.
In view of the ensuing Eid festival, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has already accorded approval for drawal of salary for the month of August by state government employees from August 26 last, the release added. (PTI)
