Goods trains collide, one dead, four trapped
BHUBANESWAR: Two goods trains collided in Orissa’s Keonjhar district early on Wednesday killing one of the drivers while four others were trapped in the wreckage.The mishap took place near Tangiripala station between Keonjhar and Banspani when an iron ore-laden train proceeding from the district rammed into an empty goods train approaching from opposite direction, railway officials said.While the body of the driver of one of the trains was recovered, the fate of four others was still unknown as they were trapped in the wreckage and rescue operation was on in full swing, a senior East Coast Railway (ECoR) official said.There were five persons including drivers and assistant drivers in both the trains, he said, adding engines of the trains were badly damaged and gas cutters and other equipment were being used to extricate those trapped.(PTI)
3 drown in Bengal boat capsize
KOLKATA:Three people drowned when a boat capsized in Matla river in West Bengal’s South 24-Parganas district Wednesday, officials said.District Magistrate N.S. Nigam said two men and one woman drowned after the accident took place near Kaikhali area.The boat capsized due to strong current in the river, he added.(IANS)
Milk costlier by Rs 5 in Indore
INDORE: Milk would be costlier by Rs 5 per litre in the city from Thursday. It would be sold at a retail price of Rs 35 per litre, District Dugdh Utpadak Sangh (DDUS), a cooperative of dairy farmers, said on WEdnesday. Rising cost of cattle feedstock and breeding maintenance has led to the price rise, which was pending for years, Rakesh Shukla, DDUS President, said. Indore Zila Kisan Sangh and Dugdh Vikreta Sangh have hailed the decision, but consumers are unhappy. (PTI)
ISRO to build new class of communication satellites
BANGALORE: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to build a new class of powerful communication satellites that packs more capacity and new technologies, its chairman K Radhakrishnan said here on Wednesday.This kind of spacecraft would handle larger amount of power and accommodate more number of transponders in the same satellite, he said adding ISRO planned to incorporate new technologies in them and get into higher bands.”Today, we are at Ku band. We want to get into Ka band and even higher band. This is one of the priorities (in the coming five-year plan (which starts in April next year)”, Radhakrishnan, who is also chairman of Space Commission and secretary in the department of space, said.”In remote sensing (satellite field), we have to get into environmental studies and climate change studies. This is one requirement, new requirement (in the next five-year plan),” he said.He said the Bangalore-headquartered ISRO would launch its first navigation satellite next year, under its Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) programme which would be followed by six more such spacecraft.
