Guwahati: Anti-big dams protestors, led by the AASU and KMSS, on Saturday rocked Assam as thousands of agitators came out to protest and blocked the turbines that were being brought through waterways for the NHPC’s Lower Subansiri dam in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.

The turbines, being shipped by Bangladeshi carriers via the Brahmaputra river, were turned back from Sonitpur district in northern Assam earlier due to relentless protests by All Assam Students Union and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti.

The ships that were docked at Dhubri on the western end of the state are being brought back and are expected to reach Jogihopa port in Bongaigaon district soon. AASU activists led a protest march in the area in the morning and have been stopped about 1 km away from the port by security forces. The AASU supporters have refused to move from the site and are staging a protest demonstration near the port.

The KMSS, led by its general secretary Akhil Gogoi, has also started statewide agitations since last night when reports of the ships being brought back were confirmed.

The group blocked railway tracks and national highway at several places on Friday night. (UNI)
