Editor,

I ask myself the question – what is the role of the KJPA and whether its leaders have been faithful to their real calling? We the members of the KJP have been spectators for far too long. That may be one of the reasons for the lack of accountability on their part. I believe the role of pastors and church elders is to spread the Gospel. Yes, the Bible also talks about social upliftment especially of the less privileged section of society, but we see neither of the two bearing fruit. Maybe the institutions they run is too mired in politics which is an extension of church politics. Just look at some of the institutions under their guidance. Most of them are in a pathetic state, which is a shame The main reason is that church leaders are taking decisions and trying to run the show with neither experience nor qualifications. A suggestion to all these leaders is to be faithful to what God has called you to, and let the rest of the institutions owned by them be run by professionals who have the expertise and qualifications to do so .

The few institutions of which they are stakeholders and which have become a shame to us, being a members of KJP is the Robert’s hospital Jaiaw and its pathetic condition. If this hospital, one of the oldest in this region, had been left to professional administrators it could have reached the standards of AIIMS New Delhi or CMC Vellore. Secondly, are there any schools run by them that we can boast are the top schools of the state? Thirdly, look at the orphanages that they are running. It’s a disheartening sight! One exception is the Synod College which is doing well but that is because it is run by efficient and qualified professionals. Last but not least, the recent MLCU affairs are a public disgrace. Being a private university I would say that it is doing well for its age but I guess it has to be at par with other institutions. Right?

It’s a shame for the so called people of God to aspire to run institutions they are not trained to. Can we get some answers as to why there is so much intervention by the KJP leaders on areas where they are not called to? I appeal to all the leaders to please turn back from your ways and start praying for a fresh vision and be a real light to the society and community.

Yours etc.,

 Is this policing?

Editor,

On a day when the entire Shillong Police force was busy attending to their hectic duties due to the visit of the Honorable Vice President of India, while passing by PTS Mawroh on September 30 at around 4.11 pm I was shocked to see a Police Vehicle (white gypsy) with a VIP light on top and bearing registration number Ml 02-0035, parked by the side of the road with four occupants, (two males and two females) quenching their thirst with beer in broad day light.

One really wonders if rules are meant just for us ordinary citizens. Can the keepers of the law get away with anything? Will anyone take action on these culprits?

 Rein in the taxi drivers

Editor,

The lackadaisical attitude of the Transport Department has led to malpractices. As a regular commuter by taxis, we are regularly taken for a ride and charged exorbitant fares. Secondly, the official release states that Government does not recognize the sharing basis despite knowing fully well that this system has been going on in Shillong for many years. Thirdly it is understood that rules and regulation are made to be implemented so why are the transport authorities not enforcing these regulations? Every time Government of India raises the price of petrol by Rs 2, 3 or 4, the taxi drivers in Shillong simply multiply the fare by 2 from each passenger. It is high time that the authorities take action on taxi drivers for over-charging and overloading.
