Guwahati: The benefits of using the waterways of the Brahmaputra and the need to develop infrastructure for greater use of the vast network of waterways in the state was on Thursday stressed by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
Gogoi highlighted the economic benefits of developing further the waterways of the Brahmaputra, with assistance and cooperation of Bangladesh, at a meeting with DoNER secretary Jayati Chandra here.
They discussed on channelising the Brahmaputra, controlling erosion and reclaiming land eroded in the state, among other issues.
Gogoi pointed that the problem of erosion in the state was similar to that faced by Bangladesh and Assam could use expertise and help from the bordering nation in tackling the problem. He added that geo-tube technology, which has been used at the Matmora embankment, would be useful in controlling erosion. The meeting also discussed on the need for better coordination between the Brahmaputra Board, state water resource development department and inland waterways authority. (UNI)
