SHILLONG: The heart of the city — Khyndailad is all set to get a major facelift with beautification work in the area is all set to commence with Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma launching the same at an official function here on Friday.

The project was scheduled to be launched in September but it got delayed due to the Monsoon.

The beautification of Khyndailad and its adjoining areas, besides widening of roads in certain stretches of the city is being done at an estimated budget of Rs 16 crore.

PWD (R&B) secretary PSG Lyngdoh on Thursday said, “First we will start with the sewage and drainage system of the area and then we will move to the surface.”

Initially the State Government will beautify the first 57 metres from the Khyndailad junction till the end of MUDA shopping complex and then the beautification work would further proceed to cover the entire stretch till Umsohsun road and Sadar police station junction in Thana Road.

The PWD will put cobbled footpaths and interlocking tiles in the entire stretch where people can enjoy a nice walk with their friends and families.

The idea behind the project is to make walking an attractive option as no vehicles would be allowed to enter the stretch once the beautification is completed next year.

Besides, no hawkers would be allowed to operate in the entire stretch of the footpaths.
