‘Misuse of NREGS fund led to murder of Sordar’

 NONGSTOIN: Alleged misuse of fund allotted under the NREGS scheme has led to murder of one Sordar of Porkhen village under Mawshynrut Block — Nikholas Sagriang-recently.

This was revealed by the eight persons arrested in this connection here on Friday.

The arrested persons are Tarsis Sanggriang (23), Rebinus Dkhar (23), Protasius Bula (24), Valentine Synshiang (24), Jeremia sangriang, Jenes Sangriang (23), Justine Charan and Noris Rangmah.

Talking to newsmen before being handed over to to Nongstoin Police, they said that the Porken village has got a Rs 3, 70,500 lakh NREGS scheme from the Office of Block Development Office, Mawshynrut but the Sordar announced the amount for the project was only Rs 1, 70,500 lakh.

An urgent meeting was called immediately where the villagers had asked the sordar and secretary to clarify regarding the NREGS scheme. The meeting witnessed heated arguments between the villagers and the sordar.

The sordar hit on the head of one the villagers who questioned him. The villagers immediately attacked the villagers.

The sordar was admitted to Riangdo CHC on October 3 and from there he was referred to Shillong Civil Hospital Shillong for better treatment. But he died on October 4.

Police arrested six villagers for their alleged involvement in the incident and two more villagers surrendered before Nongstoin Police.

Flower Show: The Nongstoin Agri Horticulture Society in collaboration with the District Horticulture Officer, West Khasi Hills organised the first autumn flower show 2011 in which 34 beneficiaries of Nongstoin area participated. The flower show was divided into three sections — flowering plants, foliage and Orchids.
