Kalam to participate in Tirthanath Sarma centenary celebrations

Guwahati: Former President A P J Abdul Kalam will deliver the keynote address at the closing ceremony of year-long birth centenary celebrations of eminent Assamese literatteur Tirthanath Sarma on October 23.

The former President would deliver the address at a function organised by Asom Sahitya Sabha and later interact with students, Sabha general secretary Parmananda Rajbongshi told reporters here today. The function would be attended among others by Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Delhi Industry and Labour Minister Ramakanta Goswami, Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Supreme Court Justice Mukundakam Sarma.

Kalam was also scheduled to release the English translation of a book written by late Sarma titled ‘History of Auniati Satra’. The function would conclude with the screening of documentary film on the literatteur.

Sarmah, a Sahitya Akademi winning literatteur, was also a former President of Asom Sahitya Sabha.

The former President is scheduled to arrive here on a two-day visit to the state on October 22 and would attend several other functions including the golden jubilee celebrations of Pandu College here and an interaction with students at the Gurukul Grammar Secondary School here. (PTI)
