SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister in charge Health and Family Welfare, Rowell Lyngdoh, on Thursday faxed a letter to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad asking him to immediately appoint a new Director at NEIGRIHMS.
Besides the demand for appointment of the new Director, the faxed letter also urged upon the Union Ministry to immediately fill up the vacant posts of faculties in the premiere institute of the North East region.
Talking to The Shillong Times here on Thursday, Lyngdoh said, “I have already faxed a letter to the Union Health Ministry seeking immediate appointment of a new Director at NEIGRIHMS.”
The demand from the State Government came after Dr ME Yeolekar tendered his resignation as Director of NEIGRIHMS.
“We want immediate replacement for the post so that the institute functions smoothly,” Lyngdoh added.
According to Lyngdoh, it is not yet confirmed whether the Central Government has accepted Dr Yeolekar’s resignation.
On whether a local might be elected as the new Director, Lyngdoh said, “It is the prerogative of the Union Ministry to appoint the best candidate. We would not like to interfere in the appointment process.”
There are speculations that former Head of Radiotherapy department in Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore Dr (Mrs) Faith Rangad, might be appointed as the new Director, but nothing has been confirmed at the moment.
Following, Dr Yeolekar’s resignation, NEIGRIHMS is now functioning without a Director as he had not handed over charge to any of his colleagues before his departure.
