SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) has asserted that there is no encroachment by Bangladeshis into the Indian territory particularly from Dawki.

A BSF official on Friday said, “There is no encroachment from Bangladesh and they are very cooperative.’’

The BSF however stated that the State Government immediately needs to give the clearance for the fencing work in 130 kilometers in East Khasi Hills and Jainita Hills border areas

“We have been asking for the clearance since long but we don’t know what is the latest update on the matter,’’the official said here on the request of anonymity.

The BSF also stated that the construction of fencing would further stop Bangladeshi intrusion into Indian territory.

However, it may be reminded that two Bangladeshi intruders where shot dead by Village Defence Party (VDP) of Hat Thymmai in August this year when the intruders were trying to steal boulders from Kasmar River.

This was not the first case where Bangladeshi national would enter and steal boulder along the edges of the international border. In fact, this was the same place where the Bangladeshi nationals attacked the local residents on December 27, 2010 where one woman, Rophel Malngiang died and two others were injured.

Reacting to a query about the stealing of boulders by Bangladeshis, the official said, “They are well confined within the limit of their territory.”

It may be mentioned that Meghalaya shares an international border of 443 kilometers with the neighbouring Bangladesh.
