One arrested for threatening witness
AHMEDABAD: A former aide of underworld don Abdul Latif, has been arrested for allegedly threatening a witness in one of the 2002 riot cases, who was stabbed to death recently, police said on Tuesday. Mehboob Baig Chotta Baig Moghal was arrested last night in connection with a complaint registered four months ago at the University police station here by one Nadeem Sayed, a witness in the Naroda Patiya riot case of 2002. Sayed was stabbed to death near his house in Juhapura early this month by some unidentified assailants. However, Baig who used to be part of the Latif gang in the 1980s was arrested under section 507 IPC which is a non-cognisable and bailable offence and not in connection with murder of Sayed. According to case details, Baig had allegedly threatened Sayed through one of his aides. The threat call was received by Sayed on his mobile phone over four months ago following which he registered a complaint with the police. (PTI)
3 girls commit suicide
JAIPUR: In a shocking incident, three girl students of class 11 committed suicide together by consuming some poisonous substance in Baran district of Rajasthan, police said on Tuesday. The teenage girls — students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Baran — took the extreme step apparently under stress due to studies, they said. After returning from tuition yesterday, they went to the house of one of them and then left together for a nearby market. After some time, one of the girls called up her mother and told her that they were under stress due to their studies and had consumed a poisonous substance, Superintendent of Police (Baran) K B Vandana said. The girl’s father rushed to the spot and took the girls to a hospital but they could not be saved, the SP said. A suicide note, with signature of the three girls, was recovered which stated that they were taking the extreme step of their own, and no one should be blamed for it, she said. The bodies had been sent for post mortem and their school teachers and friends were being questioned, the police official said. (PTI)
Tribal ward member gunned down
BALANGIR (ODISHA): A tribal village ward member was gunned down by Maoists in Odisha’s Balangir district on suspicion of exploiting women and being a police informer, police said on Tuesday. A group of gun-totting and masked women rebels called Krushna Punji (42), ward member of Khuripani in Khaprakhol police station area, from his house when he was asleep after dinner last night, they said. Punji was taken to an isolated forest area on the outskirt of the village where about 100 more armed ultras were present. The rebels disappeared into the forest after gunning down Punji whose body was found this morning, police said. A poster was found from the spot written in Hindi that the ward member was killed as he was exploiting women and inflicting atrocities on them, they said adding he was also accused of sexually abusing women. Punji was also accused of providing information about Maoists to the police. (PTI)
Man, daughter murdered
AMROHA (UP): A man and his daughter were killed in Hasanpur area of Jyotiba Phule Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, police said. The bodies of Alauddin and his daughter Soni were found from their house in Hindawala under Hasanpur with their throats slit open, Superintendent of Police Uday Pratap said. He said the reason behind the double murder could not be known immediately while further probe was on. The bodies had been sent to post-mortem. (UNI)
