NONGSTOIN: The KSU’s West Khasi Hills unit has threatened to launch agitation if the administration fails to implement work permit system in West Khasi Hills.
“We have given the Deputy Commissioner a 7-day deadline to fulfill our demand,” John Fischer Nongsiang, president of the KSU’s West Khasi Hills, said on Thursday.
He said the union was informed by the villagers of Maweit that several contractors as well as coal traders have brought non-tribal labourers (sans proper documents) to Maweit and other parts of the district.
The Government recently introduced work permit system for migrant labourers through a notification, where the Deputy Commissioners of the seven districts in the state have been directed to assign a district magistrate, a labour inspector and other staff to start the process.
Fischer said, “The work permit system will not stop infiltration from across the border, but it will to a large extent curb influx of illegal migrants.”
The Union also warned all contractors, businessmen of the district to maintain documents “if they bring in any non-tribal to work as labourer in the district.”
It may be mentioned that, the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills recently issued a notification to all the contractors, mine owners and businessmen who are employing migrant workers to obtain a registration certificate or license from the office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills to avoid any legal action under Inter-state Migrant Workmen Act, 1979.
