SHILLONG: With the vertical split in the KHNAM over the merger with the UDP, the formation of new a political party in the State is in the offing.

“We will try our best to save the identity of the party. If we fail in our objective then definitely we would have to think of forming a new political party,” KHNAM Jaiaw MDC Adelbert Nongrum told reporters after the General Council meeting here on Saturday.

While making it clear that he is not going to be a part of this merger with the UDP, he said that he would continue to work with the former KHNAM president Paul Lyngdoh on various other issues which concern the State.

“We have disagreements on this issue. But this does not mean that we will stop working with each other,” he said. Meanwhile, KHNAM general secretary Pyndapborthiaw Saiborne was extremely disappointed over the approval for the dissolution of the party and its merger with the UDP.

“This whole exercise of holding the General Council has been manipulated. The organising committee has not given an invitation to all the units to attend the General Council,” he said.

He lamented that the dissolution of the party has been achieved by bulldozing tactics without considering the merits and demerits.

“We are going to wait for the decision of the Election Commission before deciding on our future course of action,” Saiborne said.

The erstwhile general secretary of KHNAM also maintained that the party is very much alive.

“We will continue our fight to save the party,” he asserted.
