SHILLONG: The State Traffic Police (STP) has decided to act tough against reckless bike riders who resort to stunts and high-speed driving along the Shillong-Cherrapunjee road especially on Sundays.

Taking strong note of the risk involved in young bikers getting involved in dangerous stunts, the STP would intensify checking and apprehend anyone found to be involved in performing stunts that might endanger their lives and the lives of others as well.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on Sunday, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh said, “We will not allow bikers to indulge in practicing stunts on the main road as its dangerous for other people as well.”

Lyngdoh also said that the Flying Squad of the Traffic Branch would conduct checking in different parts of the city and the outskirts to prevent reckless driving. Reacting to a query, Lyngdoh stated that besides imposing fine, stringent action would be taken against violators.

The city has around 17,000 two-wheelers, mostly driven by young bikers who care two hoots about traffic rules or the rights and the safety of pedestrians.
