Ten killed in tempo-truck collision

Malegaon (Mah): Ten people, mostly industrial workers were killed on Wednesday and four others injured when the tempo in which they were travelling collided with a truck on the Mumbai-Agra national highway here, police said. The incident took place at Daregaon Bari when the tempo rammed into the cement-laden truck from the rear side killing six persons on the spot. Others succumbed to their injuries on their way to the hospital, they said. The mishap occurred when the victims, hailing from Satpur in Nashik, were returning from Amravati after attending a marriage there, police said. (PTI)

AI flight makes ‘Precautionary landing’

Kolkata: A Kolkata-Guwahati Air India flight with 119 passengers on board made ‘precautionary landing’ 17 minutes after its take off due to a technical snag here on Wednesday, airport sources said. The flight took off at 10 am from the NSC Bose airport here, but came back at 10.17 am following a technical problem, sources said. All 119 passengers were safe and 39 of them were sent to their destination in other flights and the rest would take the same plane after its repair, sources said. (PTI)

5 get 7 yrs RI for unintentional killing

Basti (UP): Five members of a family were sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by a local court here in a culpable homicide case. On November 16, 2002, Ram Chander was attacked with sticks by Hariram, his two sons Arvind and Devendra, wife Urmila and daughter Neel over a land dispute in Mukundupur village, prosecution sources said. Ram Chander, who sustained serious injuries, died on his way to a hospital. On the basis of the charge sheet filed by police and evidence, the court yesterday held all the accused guilty and awarded the sentence. (PTI)

Maoist area commander surrenders

Bolpur (WB): Responding to chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rehabilitation package, Barun Das alias Surya, a Maoist on Wednesday surrendered to the police at Suri in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Das, who was involved in several cases of killing of village guards, blowing up of rail tracks, mobile towers and other subversive activities at Khairasole area since 2007, surrendered to the police, Superintendent of Police Nishat Pervez said. Das was the “commander-in-charge of Khairasole-Dubrajpur area,” he said. (PTI)

15 booked for forgery

Nagpur: Fifteen persons, including teachers of a private school, were booked on the charges of syphoning off Rs 5.17 crore from the education department by forging documents during year 1979-2010, police said on Wednesday. The accused included Education Officer K M Choudhary and his colleagues S T Kedar, S Farkade and Archana Hazare. A retired headmistress and her brother who was working as a clerk in the school, allegedly connived with some of the employees of the district education department, and drew salaries in the name of superannuated teachers by forging their signatures and also by employing unqualified teachers during the said period. Dist officials prevent child marriage

Peramablur: Officials of the Perambalur District prevented a proposed marriage of a 15-year-old girl of Karai village in the district on Tuesday. Official sources said the marriage of the girl was to be solemnised today, but acting on information from local officials, Collector Darez Ahmed directed the District Social Welfare Officer and others to look into the matter. The officials confirmed child marriage crime on verification of the girl’s school records and found that the girl was only 15 year old. Following this, the Collector summoned the two families and counselled them against the proposed marriage. He advised the parents to allow the girl to pursue higher education as desired by her, the sources added. So far 25 child marriages had been stopped in the district over the past three months. (UNI)

‘Rogue’ tusker attacks female elephant

Dehradun: After killing six persons over the last two months, a rogue tusker prowling Uttarakhand’s Narendranagar-Rishikesh forest division attacked a female elephant which was brought from the Jim Corbett National park for the combing operation. The female elephant, Gomti, was badly injured in the nearly half an hour attack, which took place at Sushila Tiwari herbal garden near here last night, said forest officials. A team of wildlife experts rushed to the spot and fired a tranquiliser at the 50-year-old pachyderm but it managed to escape. “We are trying to track the location of the tusker. (PTI)

CPI(Maoist) torch cellphone tower

Daltonganj: The ultras of proscribed CPI (Maoist) torched a mobile phone tower of a private telecom company at Kauwal under Chhatarpur police station in Palamu district early on Wednesday. Police said the maoists disrupted movement of traffic at National Highway 98 connecting nearby Bihar from this district before setting the tower on fire. Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Jha confirmed the incndet and added that furhter investigation is on. (UNI)
