TURA: A public rally that was to take place at Dadenggre market on Wednesday morning was cancelled at the last minute over alleged threat by GNLA militants.
Local NGOs of Dadenggre along with Self-Help Groups, village nokmas, church elders and villagers had planned to hold a mass rally to appeal for the safe and unconditional release of the Dadenggre BDO PK Boro who had been abducted by GNLA militants on November 21.
“Permission was granted to the organizers yesterday but this morning they cancelled the rally suddenly,” said SDO Civil DD Shira.
There are reports that militant sympathizers had called up organizers the night before to warn them from going through with their public rally prompting the hasty decision of withdrawal.
The rally was meant to be a show of unity and support for the block official who has been in the custody of GNLA militants for over a week.
The outfit has demanded withdrawal of operations against it in return for the release of the BDO.
Despite the outfit’s demand flush out operations continue unabated.
Over 400 armed security personnel including SWAT and CoBRA special units are scouring the forests of Dadenggre and adjoining areas since last week.
Forces have been deployed for cordon and search operations in the dense jungles of Jangrapara that extend all the way towards Bajengdoba in East Garo Hills district.
The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) B Kezo was in Tura for a visit to the district and also Williamnagar to get a first-hand report of the ongoing operations against the militant outfit.
A high-level review meeting of the security scenario of the two militant affected districts was taken up during the visit of the Addl DGP.
