SCA rally to win Inter District tourney

Shillong Cricket Association (SCA) players pose with the winners’ trophy after they defeated West Garo Hills Cricket Association in the final of the U-19 Inter District Cricket Tournament in the city on Wednesday.

SHILLONG: Shillong Cricket Association (SCA) rode on brilliant knocks from Peter Anglican (76) and Uttam Chanda (47) to beat West Garo Hills Cricket Association by 137 runs in the final of the U-19 Inter District Cricket Tournament at the Cricket Ground, Polo here on Wednesday.

At one stage SCA were tottering at 72/6 with all their top order batsmen back in the pavillion. The lower middle order then steadied the innings with a 120 runs seventh wicket partnership between Peter Anglican and Uttam Chanda who led the team to a respectable 248 for the loss of eight wickets in 50 overs. Silangki Sangma claimed three wickets while Arfino T. Sangma bagged two wickets for West Garo Hills.

In reply the visitors started the run chase on a steady note with their top order batsmen playing patiently. However, the lower middle order failed to capitalize on the sound start and their innings folded for 111 runs in 38.1 overs with Benzing Sangma (34) being the top scorer. Silangki Sangma scored 29 of 43 balls. Uttam Chanda displayed an all round performance to claim two wickets for SCA.

It may be mentioned that the SCA had won all its league matches to emerge as the group leader for the Shillong zone. The trophies and prizes were distributed by R. Kharkamni, Vice President and Naba Bhattacharjee, Honorary Secretary of Meghalaya Cricket Association.
