Kendrapara: Many HIV/AIDS infected women in Odisha’s Kendrapara district are opting to medically terminate their pregnancies in fear of giving birth to infected children.

This raises questions about the effectiveness of awareness-raising programmes run by NGOs, which are campaigning that it is possible for an infected mother to have a non-infected child. “We have asked the state AIDS Control Society-run Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTC) to provide counselling to HIV-infected pregnant women and give them confidence that they can have healthy babies,” Kendrapara Additional District Medical Officer Manoj Kumar Behera said.
