State emphasizes need for border fencing

 Shillong: Emphasizing on the need for border fencing along the zero line along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border, the State Government is in favour of single-line fencing along those areas where there are human settlement.

The State Government made this proposal to Border Management Secretary AE Ahmed during a review of the border fencing on Friday.

“We have also urged for single-line fencing in places along the international border where there are human settlement,” official sources said, citing an example that they have proposed single-line fencing in places like Jaliakhola in Jaintia Hills where there is large human settlement.

The Government also sought for a joint inspection by officials of the Revenue department, district administration and the BSF to identify places where single-line fencing should be erected.

Sources also informed that the Government has also impressed on the need to put in place an Integrated Check Post in Dawki.

The Border Secretary has, meanwhile, advocated for flood lighting in areas where the border fencing work has been completed.
