SHILLONG: The irregularities in the functioning of the Village Employment Committee (VEC) at Mawryngkneng has finally ended with the removal of its chairman and secretary of the VEC at a meeting held on Monday.
VEC Chairman Clinton Kharsati and its secretary Arjun Lawai were on Monday stripped off their power and position after they were found unfit to serve and fairly implement the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in the village.
“We were not satisfied with the reports that they have presented on the 10 percent deduction from the total amount sanctioned by the government for the materials and wages meant for different projects under the scheme”, said one job card holder.
It may be mentioned that last month, various anomalies in the implementation of the NREGS were unearthed which put the members of the VEC especially the chairman and secretary on a brink of collapse. Accordingly, in a meeting held on Monday, Handle Mukhim was elected as the new chairman and Shemphang Kharsati as the secretary of the VEC.
