AGARTALA: After Meghalaya, the Ministry of Commerce has considered the proposal of setting up of border ‘haats'(markets) in Tripura in four different locations of the state, officials said here on Friday.
According to report, the ministry has already taken an initiative to open border haats along the Indo-Bangladesh border in four locations of Tripura, as proposed by the state in Kamalasagar (West Tripura), Srinagar (South Tripura), Pal Basti of Ragna (North Tripura) and Kamalpur (North Tripura) – opposite Brammanbaria, Feni and Maulovibazar district of Bangladesh.
India and Bangladesh had opened their first border haat – a common marketplace in Tura, of Meghalaya, opposite Kurigram district of Bangladesh, just across the river Jinjiram, which flows along the zero line of the border beyond the barbed wire fence on the Indian side for reviving the traditional border trade after nearly 40 years in July last.
According to the Border Haat agreement, the commodities to be traded are locally produced agricultural commodities, horticulture products, including spices in dried or powdered form, minor forest products excluding timber.
The list of products also include ceramics, plastic and aluminum products, cosmetics, toiletries, fresh and dry fish, dairy, poultry products, products of local cottage industries, wooden furniture and cane products (UNI)
