SHILLONG: The UDP Central Executive Committee (CEC) is yet to accept the resignation of the senior party member George Lyngdoh and son of the party’s founding president and former Chief Minister late EK Mawlong.

“We are yet to accept his resignation,” UDP working president Bindo M Lanong told The Shillong Times here on Saturday.

He said that the party leaders have requested Lyngdoh (who had contested the Umroi bye election from the UDP) to reconsider his decision.

Replying to a query, Lanong admitted that it seemed impossible to be able to persuade him to reconsider his decision since he (Lyngdoh) had his own personal reasons which forced him to resign.

Earlier, Lyngdoh had cited personal reasons behind his resignation which he tendered to the office bearers of the UDP in Ri Bhoi district, and also to the leaders of the UDP central body.

Along with George, the family members of the late Chief Minister have also dissociated themselves from the party.

UDP’s Ri Bhoi election committee formed

The UDP has constituted the District Election Committee (DEC) in Ri-Bhoi district in a meeting held at Nongpoh on Saturday.

While informing about the constituted of the committee, the newly elected secretary of the DEC Lurshai Wahlang said that former MLA SR Moksha has been elected as the Chief Adviser while former Chief Minister JD Rymbai and party MLA Donbok Khymdeit have been elected as the advisers.

He also informed that Onda Lawai and Dwek Kharkongor would function as vice presidents while adding that the three joint secretaries are Marcel Lyngdoh, Victor Rani and Tarsan Nongkseh.

Wahlang said that the party’s woman candidate from Nongpoh, Rona Khymdeit, has been elected as the treasurer of the DEC.

The newly elected of the DEC informed that the president and secretaries of the unit of the various constituencies in Ri-Bhoi district would be the members of the DEC.

He also informed that the DEC has also directed the units of various constituencies to submit the name of the candidates at the earliest.
