TURA: NCP has suffered jolt in Garo Hills when a former Minister and brother-in-law of Purno A Sangma, Gopinath Sangma, left the party and joined the Congress along with his 400 supporters including the vice-president and general secretary of NCP’s Salmanpara block committee.
The ex-minister and his supporters were officially welcomed by the Congress in a meeting held at Congress Bhawan in Tura in the presence of party stalwarts like Zenith M Sangma, president of DDC of West Garo Hills, Mrs Selma D Shira, president of Tura City Congress, P K Sangma, CEM of GHADC, and K C Momin, general secretary of MPCC, Tura cell and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Congress leaders hoped that the joining of senior NCP leaders will strengthen the Congress further in Garo Hills.
Gopinath Sangma said he had nothing personal against the NCP and its leaders but joined Congress for working towards development of the State.
The former MLA along with his brother Admiral K Sangma were defeated in 2008 Assembly elections.
Admiral Sangma lost to Congress candidate Saleng A Sangma from Dalamgre whereas Gopinath Sangma came a poor third from Salmanpara getting defeated by UDP’s Nimarson Momin and falling behind ANC’s Boston Marak.
