LAKHIMPUR (ASSAM): Ahead of Thursday’s talks to resolve the impasse over the construction of lower Subansiri hydro electric dam, the groups opposing the project said on Wednesday there will no compromise on their stand.
Welcoming the govt’s initiative to hold talks, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad spearheading the 32 organisations agitation against mega construction, said the “discussions should be open and no third party should be involved”.
“But our opposition to construction of big dam is very clear and we will not compromise our stand during the talks,” KMSS general secretary Akhil Gogoi told reporters here on Wednesday. “We have sought response of the local people and the overwhelming opinion is against construction of dam which will have adverse downstream affect,” he said.
The organisations demanded that the govt accept the recommendation of the recent expert committees report wherein it was stated that the model of the dam has to be changed and downstream affect to be reexamined.
On the recent economic blockade launched against Arunachal Pradesh the leaders said people of both the states had age-old ties but “that state’s govt and political leaders are out to vitiate the atmosphere by trying to negate equal right on water resources for people of both the states”. (PTI)
