‘Govt to offer land as compensation’

Five-star hotel imbroglio

SHILONG: The much awaited five-star hotel project on the old premises of the Shillong Municipal Office is all set to be delayed thanks to the five pending court cases which have been filed by shop owners whose premises are located near the boundary wall of the SMB premises.

It may be mentioned HM Cements, which is implementing the project, has tied up with the famous Marriott group of hotels, USA.

Talking to media persons here recently, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said the affected people would be compensated with alternative land.

“Those who are not residents will be asked to vacate the place,” Lyngdoh said adding that negotiations were going on with those land owners who had moved court.

This is not the first time that a public friendly project has been delayed in the state. Other important projects which are hanging fire include the Shillong airport, Shillong Bye-pass, Guwahati-Shillong four-laning amongst others.

“The HM Cements which is constructing the mega hotel has sent a modified proposal for the building,” she said.

A meeting of the technical committee will take place on Monday. The meeting will discuss the modified design of the building.

Despite all the glitches, the department is claiming that the project will be completed within the stipulated time of September 2012.

The upcoming hotel which is being constructed on 72,000 square feet area of floor area will have around two hundred rooms with state of the art facilities.

It may be mentioned that the estimated budget of the project has been fixed at Rs 100 crore.
