SHILLONG: Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) N Ramachandran has warned people against rubbing elbows with GNLA militants in the wake of the Garo Hills based rogue group being declared a terrorist outfit by the Government of India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

“A Notification under this Act bestows powers on the police and other designated authorities to take action against not only the members of the terrorist organization but even against those persons who associate themselves with such an organization, including over ground workers, sympathizers and those engaged in fund collections.

“The Act also gives powers to the police, including powers of arrest, search and seizure while dealing with offences under the Act. Police will also be able to take action against those persons who are engaged in harbouring the militants, or contribute money or any other assistance to the outfit or against those handling the funds belonging to a terrorist organization. These powers include powers to seize the property and funds belonging to such terrorist groups,” Ramachandran said in a statement issued here on Thursday.

The DGP also stated that citizens, Central and State Government officials, public servants, officials of public bodies as well as functionaries of even private firms, establishments or any organization or individual have an obligation to furnish information in their possession regarding any offence being committed under the Act.

Failure to furnish such information amounts to a criminal offence, the DGP added.

While informing that all police stations in the State are being instructed to strictly enforce the law, the top cop added that all citizens of the State have to render their support and cooperation to the police machinery to deal with the menace of terrorism.
