GNLA ultra shot dead in encounter

Tura: Garo Hills police shot and killed a militant belonging to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) inside a jungle at Megra village, 25-30 kms from East Garo Hills district headquarter Williamnagar on Thursday morning.

Based on intelligence reports, SWAT commandos of the Meghalaya police and CoBRA unit of CRPF undertook a search operation in Megra village area under Songsak police station.

They were fired upon by militants from the hideout high on a hill at 5 am leading to a brief fire fight in which security forces killed one unidentified militant while five other insurgents managed to escape including their area commander Gabrial alias Darwin.

Police commandos later searched the area for another militant who was hit on the leg but had escaped with the other members of the outfit.

They recovered one pistol and a hand grenade from the hideout.
