Editor,
The Supreme Court’s judgement accepting the contention of the Government of India (Defence Ministry) regarding the official date of birth (DOB) of General V K Singh, Chief of Army Staff has set at rest the controversy brewing for quite some time. Since his DOB of 10th May 1950 was considered throughout his career, making any change at the fag end of his career would have created multiplicity of problems like change of date of promotion, refixation of pay at different dates, calculation of his revised pay and allowances at different stages etc. Further it would have also created a lot of confusion and ill will in the hierarchy down the line. Supreme Court’s observation that Government did not harass him on this issue and that in fact he has benefited is very pertinent. Also Government has repeatedly endorsed its confidence on his efficiency and integrity. Further General V K Singh had twice given in writing that he will accept any decision of the Government regarding his date of birth. Under the circumstances it was not desirable to drag the issue to the highest court of the land. It is hoped that General VK Singh will take the verdict honourably and will not further precipitate the issue by seeking premature retirement.
