GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday stressed the need for integration and coordination of different departments and organisations to make the state secure in food grain production.

Addressing the valedictory function of North East Agri Fair 2012 here, the Chief Minister expressed satisfaction that many youths were not only earning a livelihood but also flourishing by adopting agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy, sericulture, fisheries, poultry, medicinal plants and bamboo crafts in the state.

”As our farmers have less land holdings, they should be appropriately advised so that they can best use what is available and derive maximum benefits of the various measures provided by the government”, he said. He also appealed to the farmers to come forward with their problems and assured that necessary policies for their support would be introduced by the government.

Assam Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka hoped that with the help and cooperation of all departments, farmers and also experts of Assam Agriculture University, the state would achieve self sufficiency in food grain production within the next two to three years. ”Improvement of economic conditions of farmers should be given maximum priorities and to ensure that the prices of agricultural commodities are to be remunerative”, he said.

The Fair, organized for the first time in Assam, has been sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, Government of India and hosted by Assam Agricultural University (AAU) and aimed to provide recent, appropriate and tested technological information to farmers. AAU Vice Chancellor Dr K M Bujarbaruah also spoke on the occasion. (PTI)
