Beijing: In yet another suicide bid among Tibetans, a teenage monk set himself afire in a province bordering Tibet in protest against China’s rule and was allegedly beaten up by police as they put out the flames.

18-year-old Losang Gyatso, a monk from the Kirti monastery in the Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, self-immolated in the southwestern Sichuan province yesterday, local authorities said today.

Police rushed to the scene to put out the fire and sent him to a local hospital soon after the incident, state-run Xinhua news agency reported, quoting a spokesman for Aba county’s government. (PTI)
