SHILLONG: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will be arriving on a one-day visit to the State on Sunday to review the law and order situation in Meghalaya.
Chidambaram is scheduled to land at the helipad in Upper Shillong at 11 am from where he would directly move to the Main Secretariat for a meeting with Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma along with other Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials on the prevailing law and order scenario, official sources informed on Saturday.
“Chidambaram would then meet Governor RS Mooshahary at Raj Bhavan,” the sources informed.
The Union Home Minister is also scheduled to meet a six-member delegation of the Coordination Committee on International Border (CCIB) at Raj Bhavan.
CCIB spokesperson GH Kharshanlor on Saturday confirmed that they have been given an appointment to meet the Union Home Minister at Raj Bhavan at 2.15 pm.
Police sources on Saturday informed that security has been beefed up in the State and the capital city ahead of Chidambaram’s visit on Sunday.
“All necessary arrangements have been made as per the prescribed guidelines,” a police officer said.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal informed that all measures have been taken into consideration and police personnel have been asked to beefed up security.
The Union Home Minister’s visit to Meghalaya assumes significance in the wake of heightened activities by the Garo Hills-based Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) which was branded a terrorist outfit by the Union Government last month. (With inputs from PTI)
