SHILLONG: Long queues in the General Post Office (GPO) are a common sight and the worst sufferers are the senior citizens who have to stand for longer periods much to their discomfort.

Taking strong cognizance of the difficulties faced by the elderly, the Chief Post Master General (CPMG), North East Postal Circle, PTS Kumar said that a separate counter for senior citizens would be opened before March 15.

Pointing out that the Indian Postal Services is committed to improve its services, he also informed that an E-Commerce centre would soon be set up in the Shillong GPO from where customers can place their orders online.

“It may take sometime but we will do it,” he told reporters here on Monday.

Reacting to a query on the lacklustre attitude of some of the employees of the GPO while dealing with customers, he said that the matter was one of prime concern.

“We have to be accountable and are required to discharge our duties with utmost sincerity since we are paid for it,” he added.

Meanwhile, with an aim to encourage the youngsters to take interest in Philately, the CPMG, North East Postal Circle will organise a North East Philatelic Exhibition 2012 in the city later this month.

Kumar said that the exhibition is being organised to make the youth aware of the cultural and educational values of philately.

“Our aim is to promote the hobby of stamp collection especially among the youth,” Kumar said.

The exhibition will be orgnaised at the All Saints Cathedral Hall from February 27-29 and the event will be inaugurated by Governor RS Mooshahary.

According to Kumar, around 1000 exhibits have been received from almost all the states of the country.

Reacting to a query about the stamps related to the North East, the other officials of CPMG said that there were around 40 stamps which represent different cultures and personalities of the region.

Surprisingly, only four stamps represent different personalities and dances of a state like Meghalaya which has a rich tradition and culture.

However, the CPMG has assured that more postal stamps featuring important figures and events of the north eastern region will be released in the near future,

“I’ll write to my division directors to take up the matter and suggest themes in this regard,” Kumar said.

It may be mentioned that a philatelic exhibition of this magnitude is being organised in Shillong after a gap of almost fifteen years.
