ECI to take decision on Manipur re-poll on February 23

Imphal: In all, 523 complaints lodged for photo comparison by different political parties and individuals in the State on poll violation during the January 28 Manipur elections have been completed by the office of Chief Election Officer, official sources said on Monday.

The photo comparison and proxy voting detection or finding process done under the supervision of the CEO along with Central observers will be forwarded to Election Commission of India (ECI) by late evening on Monday through email, sources said.

Up to February 16, the number of complaints with regard to electors’ photos, which have been found completely mismatched while detailed comparisons and facial determination were conducted in the presence of three observers of the Central poll panel a few days back here, was only 283 but within the last four days, it shot up to 523-odd complaints lodged from various political parties and different individuals across the State.

Although it had been reported that the ECI had instructed the State CEO to prepare for re-poll, it is not exactly known how many polling stations will go to re-poll as the poll panel is likely to decide after a close examination of the full detailed report of the photo comparison.

Three special observers and two officials from ECI will be visiting the State on February 22 on a one-day visit during which the officials will meet with all the leaders of different political parties who have lodged complaints with CEO and ECI.

ECI officials are likely to hold another meeting in New Delhi on the complaints and photo comparison work and announce the details of the re-poll on February 23 after returning from Imphal, sources said. (NNN)
