Banned outfit refutes dalliance charge of former cop
Guwahati: A purported love tangle is further souring the already ‘hate-hate’ ties between the proscribed ULFA and a former Assam top cop.
As reports of an eastern Assam female school teacher joining ULFA some time back hogged headlines in the state, former Assam DGP GM Srivastava claimed that the woman — Jahnabi Mahanta Rajknowar — was lured by ULFA’s ‘acting chairman’ Dr Abhijit Bormon’s ‘love’ rather than the outfit’s ‘ideology’.
However, Dr Bormon on Friday emailed a statement to media here refuting Mr Srivastava’s claims and accused the former cop of tarnishing the image of two persons – the ULFA leader as well as the school teacher.
Jahnabi Mahanta Rajknowar is a teacher with a government school in Naharkatia area and is also known on the state’s literary circuit as a short story writer.
Police said that Rajknowar – a mother of two – had not returned home since February 13.
Dr Bormon, who signs himself as ‘Dr Abhijit Assam’ as per the ULFA’s decision to replace surnames with ‘Assam’, hit out at Srivastava and alleged that the latter was spreading false news to tarnish the group’s image.
He added that the former cop was trying to make light the issue of a school teacher being drawn to the ULFA fold, driven by the group’s ideology and aim.
The ‘acting chairman’, while refraining from demanding an apology from Srivastava, said the ex-DGP should himself extend an apology to the people of the state for spreading false stories.
Jahnabi had recently disappeared from her home and a letter, purportedly written by her, said that she had joined the ULFA, inspired by the outfit’s ideology.
Dr Bormon is the new ‘acting chairman’ of the outfit’s hardliner faction and his true identity is not clear yet. (Agencies)
