Kolkata: Akash Banerjee, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was on Thursday remanded in police custody for 14 days by a city court for allegedly assaulting a police officer on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old was arrested yesterday after he slapped

a traffic sergeant when his vehicle was stopped for jumping a red light and obstructing traffic at Kidderpore crossing in south-west Kolkata.

Akash was in the car with two of his friends.

The nephew and his companions, when questioned for the traffic violation, reportedly beat up the sergeant. The driver of the car was also nabbed.

This morning he and the three others were produced before the magistrate of the Alipore District and Sessions Court amid tight security.

The prosecution prayed for Akash’s police custody to investigate the incident. (UNI)
