SHILLONG: The State Government has expressed it keenness to convert the major rivers in the State into water routes to boost tourism as well as trade and commerce.
Informing this here on Thursday, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said the State Government wanted to promote three rivers in the State – Ranikor, Simsang and Jingiram – into water routes. “We have asked for support from the Inland Waterways department of India to provide us support to revive our water routes,” Dr Sangma informed.
Elaborating on the progress of this programme, Dr Sangma said, “The preliminary survey has been done and a feasibility report is now being prepared.”
To promote these rivers into water routes, Dr Sangma stressed on the need to make available the facilities to invite tourists to travel by water ways.
“Once these river routes are developed they will be used as link with some parts of Bangladesh where traders are engaged in trading activities through river routes,” Dr Sangma added.
