SHILLONG: The Secretary, Wageasi Surrounding Area Development Committee has urged the East Garo Hills (EGH), Deputy Commissioner (DC) to implement the Supreme Court Order dated November 9, 2005 of Civil Writ Petition 136 of 2003 restricting the carriage of truck load to 9MT.

The Secretary informed that recently a public meeting was held at Wageasi School Field where the people unanimously resolved to undertake some democratic steps to check truck load beyond 9MT and to save the NH-62, which is the lifeline of East and South Garo Hills.

But till date no action has been taken to stop this overloading from the side of the district administration as the truckers are carrying more than 20MT alleged the Secretary. “Recently, we even observed that the bodies of the truck are also enlarged to carry more loads which is illegal and violates the fitness rule of transport norms,” he said.

Meanwhile, the DC, EGH remained unavailable for comments on the issue when contacted
