Fossils of starfish certified by paleontologists to be 450 million years old housed in a little museum in the village.

Mawsynram: Principal Secretary, Community and Rural Development and Fisheries, KN Kumar said he has visited Mawlyngbna several times and has fallen in love with the village.

Pointing at the scenic beauty of the greenery and wide expanse of gorges, equal to the best in the world, Kumar said this is a perfect tourism destination.

A significant characteristic of the people of Mawlyngbna is their ability to take quick decisions to avail government schemes, Kumar informed.

An enthusiast for promoting fisheries in Meghalaya he said that an ornamental fish park, the first of its kind will be set up in the village. People have donated 5 acres of land for the purpose.

“We have tied up with Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) for supply of the ornamental fish for the fish park here. Above all, the people of Mawlyngbna have also decided to donate 500 acres of wasteland for bio-fuel plantation,” Kumar said pointing to the huge tracts of rocky wasteland that lies unutilised. A small hut in the village is being converted into a museum for artefacts but more important for the starfish fossils which Kumar says has been certified by paleontologists to be around 450 years old. He said this would be a major tourist attraction apart from the natural fountain in the village.

Mawlyngbha is also the habitat of the rare Pitcher Plant.
