SHILLONG: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Saturday conducted an actual hospital mock drill which saw the active participation of many departments and hospital staff besides others at Shillong Civil Hospital here on Saturday.

With an aim to make available all kinds of safety plans of the hospital in case of any disaster, the district administration conducted this exercise to prepare the concerned departments to act quickly in case of such disasters.

This drill also assumes significance following the government’s wake up call to all hospitals in the state directing them to have minimum safety facilities installed and assessments done to counteract any emergency situation.

The mock drill involved the participation of all staff of the hospital, EMRI, traffic police department, fire service department, armed forces, psychiatrists, NGOs, social welfare.

It also involved transportation, treatment of casualties, shifting of casualties by 108 and requirements needed for disaster response.

It may be mentioned that the East Khasi Hills district administration had last year organised several meetings with hospital authorities in the state discussing at length the importance to have safety measures in the hospital premises and also decided to have fire alarms and smoke detectors installed at each room of every floor.

This decision came after the incident at AMRI hospital, Kolkata that claimed 90 lives last year.
