SHILLONG: Ronchugiri NCP legislator James K Sangma has expressed concern over the present condition of many of the vocational training institutes in the State with special reference to the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Polytechnics.
“What is pathetic is that most of the practical training which are provided by these institutions are outdated and has no relevance with all the latest modern technology which we see at present,” Sangma said during Question Hour in the Assembly on Thursday.
While referring to the diploma course on the automobiles which are provided by these institutes, he said that it is sad to see that students of automobiles are still handling old Mahindra jeeps.
“I fail to understand why the Government is turning a blind eye to this problem. We know that at present majority of the vehicles have either an MPFI or CRDA engine,” Ronchugiri NCP legislator said.
He strongly felt that the Government should take immediate steps to upgrade these institutes.
In reply, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that the Government is aware of this problem adding that steps are being taken to upgrade these institutions in a phased manner.
He said that the Government is also trying to convince various agencies like the NEEPCO and MeECL to adopt these institutions.
In fact, Chief Minister informed that the MeECL had agreed to adopt two of the ITIs but finally adopted only the ITI at Williamnagar.
