SHILLONG: “When you reach for the stars, you might not get one yet you will not come back with a handful of mud,” said NR Narayana Murthy, Chairman Emeritus of Infosys.

Delivering his convocation address at the third convocation ceremony of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong on Thursday, Murthy cited his own company’s growth since 1993, even as he dwelt on the importance of the management students to aim for the stars.

Infosys, a world renowned company of which Murthy is a founder, has grown its revenues consistently for the last 75 quarters in a row since going public in India in 1993. By March 2012 it estimates annual revenues crossing $7 billion. Today, it has over 130,000 employees, around 90 overseas offices, and more than 700 active and satisfied clients.

It may be added that IIM Shillong’s third Convocation was particularly solemn and emotional given its founder Director’s planned departure soon this year.

The Institute has in the recent past received tremendous accolade within the country and worldwide through the leadership abilities and efforts of Prof AK Dutta.

“We as an institute are equally proud of the acknowledgment received from various ranking agencies placing us in the top 10 amongst B-Schools within three years of existence,” said Prof Dutta.

The highlight of the event was the distribution of PGDM Diplomas to 93 bright, and deserving graduating students of the Institute.

In addition, the Rathindranath Datta Gold Medal for securing the highest CGPA among all the students was this year jointly received by Niketa Kosa and Sria Majumdar.

Prof AK Dutta Gold Medal awarded each year for Best All Round performance by a student in terms of general proficiency including character, conduct, excellence in academic performance, extra-curricular activities and social service was bagged by Anshumali.

The Institute’s Medal for positive contribution to campus life was received by Neetisha Arya, while the Math Finance AG Gold Medal to the student securing highest CGPA in Quantitative Finance courses was received by Rajat Sethia.
