Meghalaya-Assam border dispute

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has asserted that Meghalaya has enough evidence to claim ownership of the border areas currently under dispute with the neighbouring state of Assam.

The Chief Minister’s statement comes a day after the neighbouring state claimed that the Assam Chief Minister’s residence atop Koinadhara Hills at Khanapara lies within the territory of Assam.

State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Prof RC Laloo, had claimed in the floor of the Meghalaya Assembly that the State government has records to prove its ownership of the land where the Assam Chief Minister residence is located.

Dr Sangma also stated that instead of mere claims, the more important thing for Meghalaya is to make its case stronger with the support of all documents and papers.

“We are not talking about a particular location but all the areas of disputes which need to be settled amicably,” Dr Sangma told reporters.

He added that earlier the State could not prepare its case with proper documentations and for this reason the State Chief Secretary had sought for more time to frame the modalities for the boundary talks between the two states.

All the documents have been submitted to the Assam Government which has sought additional time to examine them, Dr Sangma stated.
