Woman duped of Rs 15.65 lakh

 JOWAI: A woman from Nartiang village in Jaintia hills district was allegedly cheated of Rs 11.65 lakh by a person hailing from Bishnupur, Shillong on the pretext of getting her son admitted into a medical college in Bangalore.

The woman, Aijam Synnah, lodged a complaint with Jowai police against one Bhaskar Basu of Bishnupur.

Synnah has claimed that she wanted to get her son admitted into a medical college in Bangalore and the accused, Bhaskar Basu, had promised to arrange for her son’s admission in Bangalore. Synnah also alleged that she had paid a sum of Rs 11.65 lakh to Basu. However, her son did not get the admission after which she made repeated calls to the accused to refund her money which he has been putting off on several pretext.

Failing to receive back the money, Synnah decided to lodge the complaint on Wednesday.

Man duped of Rs 22 lakh

In another case of alleged fraud, one Ning Phawa of Ialong village has lodged a complaint against one Bok Phawa of Ladthadlaboh Jowai for duping him of Rs 22 lakh.

According to the complaint, Phawa stated that acting on the advice of the accused he had handed over a sum of Rs 22 lakh to him to be deposited in a bank.

However, he never got any interest from the bank after which he realized that he had been duped and according lodged a complaint against the accused Bok Phawa. Police investigation is on.

In another case, one Zaheer Ghafoor Pariat lodged a complaint at Shillong Sadar Police Station alleging that one Bell Johnstar Wanniang had fraudulently en-cashed a cheque for Rs 52,550 from Dena Bank, Shillong Branch. Police is investigating the matter.
