TURA: The most important week in the Christian calendar of the world- Holy Week began with the celebration of Palm Sunday to commemorate the visit of Lord Jesus Christ for the last time to his beloved city of Jerusalem before his crucifixion on the cross.

Thousands of Christians in Garo Hills took part in the celebration of Palm Sunday and the Roman Catholic faithful retraced the steps of Christ by participating in a church procession waving palm leaves and singing hymns just as it was done thousands of years ago in Jerusalem.

Rev. Fr. Thomas Mankin led the faithful in celebration of Palm Sunday at the Sacred Heart Church in Tura, Chandmari.

Verses from the holy Bible which mention the events that took place on Palm Sunday were read out and special prayers offered.

Similar celebrations were reported from different corners of Garo Hills.

On Tuesday evening a special mass is to take place at Cathedral church in Tura for the blessing of the sacred sacramental oil that is used for various religious events throughout the year.

Maundy Thursday is to be observed with holy mass and enactment of the scene where Christ washes the feet of his twelve disciples and has the Last Supper with them before he is betrayed by one of the disciples, Judas Iscariot.

Church service on Thursday will commence from 6:30 PM which will include a night of vigil in which devotees will offer prayers.
