SHILLONG: The KSU has raised serious doubts if the Work Permit System (WPS) is implemented in the State after detecting over 300 migrant labourers who are yet to be registered.

Despite the government’s claim that it has implemented the WPS since October last year, KSU environment and cultural secretary Joe Marbaniang said that he is not too sure if the WPS is implemented in toto to address the problem of influx.

Informing that the KSU has conducted many checking to various government sites in and around to know if the mechanism has been implemented Marbaniang said that they are surprised to detect around 300 labourers did not possess work permit.

Criticizing the Government for adopting a double standard policy, the KSU leader said, “If the implementation of WPS continues in this manner, the KSU will be compelled to shoulder responsibility to do the needful,”.During the budget session of the state assembly, deputy chief minister (labour) Rowell Lyngdoh informed that migrant labourers are not registered with the state government at present under the Inter-state Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Act, 1979.The reply of Lyngdoh had contradicted with claims made by chief minister Mukul Sangma on several occasions that his government was committed to implement compulsory registration of migrant workers as the government was seriously concerned over influx problem.
