Imphal: In commemoration of the completion of the 95th year of the Tangkhul Baptist Churches Association, Women Union celebrated the Pre-Centenary along with the 32nd Anniversary Celebration of Alice Christian Higher Secondary School under the theme “Live and Grow” from April 13 at Mission Ground, Ukhrul town.
The speakers of the event include Rev Dr Steven C Van Ostran of ABC Rocky Mountains, USA, Dr Edwin Tegenfeldt who is a missionary in India from America and Miss Kuinao Zimik, a patron of ACHSS.
Meanwhile, the secretary of the Women Union Wungreiwon K. Shimray stated on the second day that the women union was established in 1917 by Alice Pettigrew, wife of William Pettigrew who introduced Christianity in Manipur, and the union will be completing its 100th year in 2017. She said that this is a time for retrospection of the status of Tangkhul women, from the pre-christianity period till the present time and their aspirations for the future. Alice Christian Higher Secondary School, established in 1980 by Alice Pettigrew, is an important project of the women union, continued Wungreiwon, and the school was upgraded to the higher secondary level with Science stream in 2000 and Arts in 2002, she added.
She said Tangkhul women should re-examine and discuss their present status in the society, their achievements and aspirations for the future, acknowledging that women have come a far way after Christianity and western education have touched their lives. (NNN)
