SHILLONG: Pending the formal inauguration of the State’s second border haat at Balat, KHADC CEM Pyngshngain N Syiem along with Sunamganj (Bangladesh) district Deputy Commissioner would inaugurate the business activities in the border haat on May 1.

The Union Ministry of Trade and Commerce had earlier asked the State Government to start business at the border haat at Balat sans its formal inauguration.

Informing this here on Friday, an official said that the decision to start the business in the border haat was taken during a meeting of the Haat Management Committee (HMC) from both the Indian and Bangladesh side on Thursday.

The official also informed that other dignitaries who would be present on the occasion will include East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal, Additional Deputy Commissioner DM Wahlang who is also the chairman of the HMC on the Indian side, senior officials from Bangladesh along with BSF and BGB officials.

“The formal inauguration of the border haat will take place once Union Minister of Trade and Commerce Anand Sharma and his Bangladeshi counterpart fix the date,” he added.
